Capstone Ideas

For my capstone I intend to create a level in UDK, basing it on the story I have been working with during my time in college. The story I have been working with is evil squirrels wanting to eradicate human life from Earth, and I hope to have material at my capstone telling that story as well. As of now, I am not sure how much of the story will be incorporated into the level. I'm thinking of trying to get squirrel characters modeled and put in, but I have to learn more first. Also, my level may be set up different ways, and that is what my ideas are for.

1. My first idea was a level based around stealth gameplay. I could just create the level for stealth, but I have also thought putting AI in to "patrol" might be a nice thing to include. That is another thing I would have to learn, though.

2. A standard deathmatch style level, where there would be (in theory) the good squirrels against the evil squirrels. It would fit in with the story and probably be simpler.

3. An adventure style level that would be based more around exploring the level. It would be a bit more difficult to fit into the story, but I believe I could make up a scenario where you would be scouting an enemy camp, building, or something similar.

I love your evil squirrels idea! I’ve seen some of your projects since I was in a few of the game design classes and it’s really awesome to see you use the idea in your capstone. You’d have a lot of supplemental material. The reason why I commented on this blog post was due to the fact that I enjoy doing game design and liked the ideas you had for capstone.

Overall, all of the ideas sound really great actually.

      1. Is it possible for you to add takedown attacks or stealth attacks so you can sneak up on squirrels to kill them? You could also have a story going on as you stealth around. Have different checkpoints and maybe a squirrel talks to you via headset or something.

      2. Wondering what weapons they would use… And whether or not this would be multi-player or AI. Would be interesting to do a multiplayer map with different squirrel classes set in a forest base or something.

      3. Actually again you can probably fit in story via checkpoints or before you explore the level/and at the end.

All of them have an opportunity to tell story, you’ll just need to space it between gameplay.

  2. I think all are pretty solid ideas, but I think you should try and go with what you find most interesting to do and what would differ from the other standard DM or etc. UDK levels

As soon as I read the description I cracked up laughing with this image of squirrels running around with guns shooting people! I think is a pretty good idea and will be pretty good if you can pull it off.

  4. Idea 2 reminds me of Conqer's bad Fur day, it sounds like any of these would be fun.

Well all three ideas seem solid and a stealth game would be neat to see. Only thing is you mention working into the story, personally i believe any game ( since all your ideas are game based ) should have a solid back-story or better yet a full story within them (mainly for single player) so if it would be hard to work into the story i would avoid it. Other than that i would take your story and do one of the first two ideas. I think the first one would be the best if you want to tell the story while the TDM would be best if you just want a fun game based in your story, if you do this approach though have some back-story with your project so we know whats what.

I think your first two ideas sound the best. I think you would need to put in AI for the stealth missions otherwise there wouldn’t be as much tension. The death match would probably be easier, but you still might want to put AI in, just to show how the game would play with more people. At capstone you may not have access to enough computers to give true feeling of the game.

  7. I like this idea. I hope that the squirrels stay small and the environments are over sized so you really feel that. Kind of like Chin N' Dales Rescue Rangers

  8. Hey Cody,

I think the third idea would be cool. Exploring the world as a squirrel could bring a different and interesting perspective to a game. I feel like maybe you could combine 1 and 3 to create an adventure/stealth game where you have to break into an enemy base without getting caught.

It's ideas like this that I personally am drawn to. Because I like things that are silly and zany (with all due respect) and I think it's a fun, different approach to showing your skills from college. I say all this because I'm the say way. When I create things or write stories, etc. I always like to lean more toward comedy so your idea sticks our for me and I find it very interesting.

And I also remember the comic from comic class and I really enjoyed that for the same reasons.

  10. I fully endorse this capstone idea. It sounds like it would be really fun to work on. I think the concept is open enough you'd be able to take the level design in whatever direction you want to go with it. I'm sure there are a ton of crazy squirrel things on the internet you could look at for inspiration. Also, when your capstone is done I think there would be a lot of potential for some sort of squirrel tower defense game. Protect your backyard and bird feeders from waves of attacking squirrels.

  11. As with most people I love the idea of evil squirrels, but my advice on it is to research, research, and research squirrels. Figure out the movement, the behavior, and style of various squirrels and implement that into your game. There is nothing more appreciative playing a game and there is clear evidence the creator did the proper research and made the game not only fun but realistic in some sense.

  12. Sounds like a good and creative idea man. Level building is always fun to do and the sky is the limit when it comes what you can create and put in a level.

  14. Jessica Faux- Beth was talking about how people get stuck into a specific program and I think we should listen closely to that. Sooo many people are using UDK when there are so many engines available for free out there to everyone. I know this is not the time to learn, but many programs run similarly and deserve a looking at. People remember different.
